Samsung smart window is the most important and welcomed buzz word of the consumer electronics show 2012. The Samsung smart window is the award winning product presented by Samsung in the CES 2012. The CES 2012 was held in Los Vegas from 10th to 13th January, 2012. About 3100 companies participated in the show and have truly amazed the world by presenting highly innovative products. The CES 2012 has exactly proved that “Innovation has no limit”.
I will talk mainly about Samsung smart window that has ignited the spark of excitement all over the world. It is the most innovative of all the products presented in the CES 2012. The Samsung representatives have described potential use of this smart window in people’s houses in place of actual windows. Samsung’s concept behind this product is very different and creative. Taking the existing technologies, Samsung has combined them in a form of window, which no one has ever imagined before. The smart window also has some additional applications which make it even more fun to use. In brief you can say that it is not like the iPad but far more than the iPad or a big giant screen iPad.
Samsung’s Transparent Smart Window at CES 2012
Samsung smart window is nothing but a transparent LCD touch screen which you can fit in any window of up to 46 inches size. Whether it is your office, living room or kitchen, fit it in any window and use it whenever you want while enjoying the outside scenery. Its display is truly marvelous with the resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The screen has a contrast ratio of 500:1 and is about 22% more transparent than previous LCDs. During the day, the outside light is used for illumination, while for night there is a night mode and the inbuilt lights fixed on the edges of the smart window illuminates the display. The inbuilt lights consume only 10% of the power which other LCDs of same size uses. This feature makes it a truly eco-friendly product.
As it is transparent and is designed to be fixed in the window, you must be thinking of privacy concerns. The good news is there is absolutely no privacy issue. The smart window is a one-way mirror. You can see from inside to outside but not from outside to inside. The best part is that the smart window has a “Digital blinds” application. Just with a finger touch, you can add blinds on the screen to control the amount of light. You can use the blinds in the same way as you use your real-world curtain blinds. So don’t worry about privacy and keep on tweeting, browsing and watching TV whenever you want. This is so amazing, isn’t it?
The Samsung has also introduced some applications to use with this smart window. Its common applications include weather forecast, flight schedule, stock information, recipes, maps, and much more. Just with the touch of finger, you can use office productivity application, update status on Facebook, check who is following you on twitter or see the latest video uploaded on YouTube from your favorite channel. If you do not feel like browsing or tweeting, just relax on sofa and watch TV on this smart window. Thus you have limitless options to experience with Samsung smart window. The icons are displayed every time you use the smart window. If you don’t need icons, just swipe them aside with your finger.
The display of Samsung smart window is 9 millimeter thick and weighs only 10 lbs. Some of its potential uses as described by Samsung include product showcases, grocery stores, medical equipment, and electronic boards and other home applications.
Seeing the zeal and zest with which this new technology is received, it is expected that Samsung will start its mass production till December 2012 and soon we will see it in houses in place of actual windows. Nothing can be said about the price of Samsung smart window as Samsung has not disclosed it yet. It is also being stated by Samsung that the technology will further be scaled down to make it suitable for military purposes.
On the debut of Samsung smart window, the Display bank has estimated the change in the value of the transparent display market. According to Display bank, the value of transparent display market will increase from $900 million to $87 billion.
In an interview, Samsung’s senior marketing manager Bill Beaton stated that:
“We look at it as a smart window. You can think of jewelry displays with it or freezer windows at the grocery store that tell you where to find the ice cream”.
Samsung Smart Window Review by Mobile Nations
No doubt, Samsung smart window is really an awesome innovation. Still it arises some questions regarding its success. How long people would feel comfortable staring a window when there are a number of portable devices like iPhone, iPad, and tablets providing the same functionality. And what if the window gets smashed by a random ball? Another important concern will be its price. The price is expected to be quite high to be affordable by common folks. So let’s see, what happens next!!!
